Nigeria and Thailand have agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in technology, agriculture, commerce and renewable energy, as both countries seek to expand economic and strategic partnerships.
Vice President Kashim Shettima stated this on Wednesday when he received a delegation from Thailand at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. He said Nigeria’s relationship with Thailand should move beyond traditional areas such as crude oil and rice production.
Shettima described Nigeria as a large market with significant opportunities in agriculture, ICT, renewable energy and solid minerals. He urged Thai businesses and investors to take advantage of Nigeria’s young population, workforce, natural resources and strategic position in Africa.
Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister, Yousef Khalawi, who was on his first visit to Africa, described Nigeria as a strategic partner and an important gateway to stronger ties with West Africa. He also commended the economic transformation efforts of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Khalawi said Thailand was proposing a Thailand-Africa Initiative aimed at strengthening economic cooperation, business and people-to-people relations. He identified agriculture, universal health coverage and tourism as areas where Thailand could share expertise and expand cooperation with African countries.
Both sides expressed optimism that stronger collaboration would create new opportunities for investment, technology transfer, trade and sustainable development between Nigeria and Thailand.
