Security forces have reportedly neutralised six suspected members of an armed separatist group during an operation in Amiyi community, Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The Anambra Commissioner of Police, Nnanna Ama, said the operation was carried out on Saturday by a Joint Security Team comprising the Army, Navy, Police, Department of State Services and local vigilantes. He said the team acted on intelligence about the activities of a criminal network in the area.
According to him, the operatives trekked for about four hours through difficult terrain and dense palm forest before reaching an identified camp, where they came under fire from the suspected group. Six suspects were reportedly neutralised, while others fled, with some believed to have sustained gunshot injuries.
The commissioner said one security operative was killed and another injured after an explosive device suspected to have been planted in the area detonated. Two pump-action guns and charms were reportedly recovered, while camps and structures linked to the group were dismantled.
Ama commiserated with the family and colleagues of the deceased operative and wished the injured officer a speedy recovery. He said security agencies would sustain intelligence-led operations to dismantle criminal camps, recover illegal arms and prevent violent groups from establishing bases in the state.
