The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has announced that its 2026 All Nigeria Editors Conference (ANEC) will hold at the International Conference Centre, Enugu, on September 24 and 25.
Themed “The Ballot, the Media and the Task of Keeping Democracy Alive,” the conference will bring together more than 500 editors and other stakeholders to examine the role of the media in strengthening democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections. The sub-theme is “When Lies Look Real: Detecting and Debunking AI Disinformation Before, During and After Election.”
The Obi of Onitsha, His Royal Majesty Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, will chair the event, while former Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, is expected to deliver the keynote address. Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah and Prof. Auwal Yadudu of Bayero University, Kano, will also speak on the opening day.
Other speakers include immediate past Nigerian Bar Association President, Mazi Afam Osigwe; Prof. Chinyere Okunna of Paul University, Awka; veteran journalist Owei Lakemfa; ThisDay Ombudsman Kayode Komolafe; and Dr Richard Okoye, Founder and Chief Medical Director of Save A Life Hospital, Port Harcourt.
The second day will also feature a presentation by Prof. Farooq Kperogi of Kennesaw State University, USA, on AI-driven disinformation, while editors will engage governors, political party leaders and heads of government agencies during an executive session. The Guild said the conference would focus on credible elections, public trust, responsible journalism and strengthening democratic governance.
