Nigerian gospel singer Asu Ekiye has clarified the circumstances surrounding the dissolution of his 28-year marriage to Kunemofa Asu, saying his estranged wife initiated the divorce proceedings.
Ekiye, popularly known as the “Prince of the Niger Delta”, said his wife expressed her desire to end the marriage, moved out of their home and later filed for divorce. He made the clarification in a social media post following reactions to his earlier announcement about the marriage’s end.
The singer said he spent about a year trying to reconcile with his wife and preserve the marriage, but his efforts were unsuccessful as she remained firm in her decision.
Ekiye said he decided to explain the circumstances after receiving numerous calls and messages from concerned fans. He stressed that he held no bitterness or ill will towards his former wife and had chosen to approach the new phase of his life with dignity and respect.
The Bayelsa-born artiste, whose music incorporates Niger Delta cultural influences, said the marriage, which began in 1998, had actually ended about a year ago. He explained that he delayed making the development public to allow both parties time for reflection, clarity and acceptance.
