The Wife of the Delta Governor, Mrs Tobore Oborevwori, has urged parents to stop hiding children with autism and other special needs, stressing the importance of acceptance, care and inclusion.
Oborevwori, Founder of the You Matter Charity Foundation, made the call during the foundation’s eighth free medical outreach for children with special needs in Asaba. She said fear, shame and societal misunderstanding should not prevent children from accessing healthcare, education and opportunities to reach their potential.
She disclosed that 860 children had so far benefited from the foundation’s interventions, including free medical consultations, medications, educational support and assistive devices. The programme, initially targeted at vulnerable persons across Delta’s three senatorial districts, has now expanded to all 10 federal constituencies in the state.
“Stop hiding them. Give them the care, attention and support they deserve,” Oborevwori said, urging parents and caregivers to provide children with special needs with love, patience and sustained support.
The foundation’s Director-General, Mrs Lawrentta Ogbedo, and other stakeholders commended the initiative, saying collaboration with local councils and health authorities had strengthened its humanitarian efforts.
The outreach featured free medical treatment and the distribution of wheelchairs, educational and assistive devices, as well as food items to beneficiaries. Stakeholders also called for greater inclusion and continued support for vulnerable children and their families.
