The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Niger Council, says it will make the annual International Youth Day celebration compulsory for all its affiliate unions in the state.

NLC Niger Chairman, Mr Idris Lafene, disclosed this in Minna during the 2026 International Youth Day celebration organised by the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), Niger Council. He commended MHWUN for becoming the first NLC affiliate in the state to organise the event.

Lafene urged young workers to use their energy and skills to contribute to societal development, while making positive use of social media and avoiding manipulation by politicians.

MHWUN Niger Chairman, Mr Usman Dabban, said empowered and engaged young health workers were essential to building a stronger health system. He called for more employment opportunities, improved working conditions and greater investment in youth health and welfare.

The Director-General of Student Affairs in the state, Bello Sheriff, recommended a dedicated youth mainstreaming desk in the Ministry of Planning, guaranteed funding for youth programmes and a unified youth database. MHWUN State Youth Coordinator, Abdullahi Musa-Erena, also called for improved welfare, recruitment and regular training for health workers.

The Director-General on Labour to the Niger Government, Mr Kabir Ibrahim, urged government to provide quality education, housing, jobs and digital infrastructure to help young people realise their potential.
