A food scientist with the Federal Ministry of Health, Dr Kafayat Adebayo, has urged Nigerians to reduce their consumption of over-processed and ultra-processed foods and drinks to promote better health.
Adebayo, the Oyo State Coordinator of Port Health Services, gave the advice during a health talk at the 2026 Quarterly Lecture organised by Criterion, Oyo District, in Ibadan. She said many highly processed and refined foods may lose beneficial nutrients and could contribute to health problems when consumed excessively.
She encouraged Nigerians to eat more locally available fruits, vegetables and beans, describing them as nutritious and often more affordable. She also advised people to avoid late-night eating, exercise regularly and undergo routine health checks to support early detection of diseases.
Also speaking, educationist Alhaja Jamilat Gbadegesin urged Nigerians to stay away from hard drugs while speaking on the sources and application of Shariah in society. She stressed the need for greater understanding of Shariah and tolerance among people of different religious backgrounds.
The Amirah of Criterion, Alhaja Sakirat Ibraimoh, said the lecture was organised to educate and mobilise Muslims, particularly women, on their responsibilities to their families and communities. She added that participants were encouraged to promote peaceful relationships, contribute positively to society and care for the environment.
