An education expert, Mrs Adesuwa Aghayere, has urged parents to use the school holidays to identify their children’s learning needs and address academic challenges before the next school term.
Aghayere, Principal of Chrisidia Education Centre, Benin City, said holidays should provide time for children to rest and recreate, but parents should also keep them engaged in simple learning activities. She advised parents to review their children’s academic performance, identify subjects where they struggled and understand the reasons behind the difficulties rather than comparing them with other children.
According to her, children learn at different paces and may respond better to different approaches, including visual materials, practical activities and role-play. She encouraged parents to discuss learning difficulties with their children and, where necessary, engage their teachers or schools for appropriate support.
Aghayere recommended about 30 minutes of daily study for primary pupils and one hour for secondary school students, stressing that consistency was more important than lengthy study sessions.
She also urged parents to balance recreational screen time with reading, creative activities and other educational pursuits. Parents, she said, should ensure that children travelling during the holidays have access to suitable learning materials.
The education expert warned that children who completely disengage from learning during long holidays could struggle to recall previous lessons and readjust when school resumes. She urged parents to use the break as an opportunity to understand what works best for each child and provide support early.
