The legacy of legendary Nigerian-Cameroonian musician Prince Nico Mbarga is being revived through the return of Rocafil Jazz, led by his sons, Nico Mbarga Jnr. and Phils Mbarga.
In a heartfelt tribute, his daughter, Estelle Mbarga, recalled her father not only as a celebrated musician but as the man she knew simply as “Daddy.” She remembered staying awake into the early hours to welcome him home from performances and the joy he brought her, including returning from international trips with chocolates that made her feel special among her peers.
Estelle also reflected on the devastating loss of her father while she was still a secondary school student. She recalled how his death left her unable to eat for days, while his funeral attracted thousands of people who sang and danced to celebrate the music that had touched their lives.
Years later, she said the family has grown and the music has endured. Rocafil Jazz is now being relaunched by her younger brothers, with a mission to take their father’s music to audiences around the world once again.
Prince Nico Mbarga, renowned for his distinctive blend of Nigerian and Cameroonian musical influences, remains best remembered for his iconic hit “Sweet Mother,” one of Africa’s most recognisable songs.
Estelle called on music lovers and admirers of her father’s legacy to join the family on the new journey as Rocafil Jazz seeks to introduce Prince Nico Mbarga’s music to a new generation and take it to global audiences.
