India has called for a stronger role for Nigeria in BRICS, saying the country’s participation would boost Africa’s representation and strengthen the voice of the Global South in global economic affairs.
The Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Amb. Abhishek Singh, made the call on Wednesday during a media engagement in Abuja. He said Nigeria’s position as Africa’s largest economy and one of the world’s most populous countries gave it significant strategic and economic weight.
Singh noted that Nigeria had been invited to the 18th BRICS Summit, scheduled for Sept. 12 and 13 in New Delhi, and expressed hope that President Bola Tinubu would lead a high-powered delegation to the meeting. The summit will focus on economic cooperation and sustainable development under the theme, “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.”
The envoy said stronger Nigerian participation would help advance common interests of developing countries, particularly reforms of international institutions and greater representation for the Global South in global economic governance.
He also highlighted growing economic ties between India and Nigeria, disclosing that bilateral trade increased to about $9 billion in the 2025–2026 financial year, from $7.13 billion the previous year.
Singh added that more than 200 Indian companies currently operate in Nigeria and employ nearly 100,000 Nigerians. He described the relationship between both countries as a mutually beneficial partnership with significant potential for deeper cooperation.
