Nollywood historical epic “King Kosoko: The Battle for Lagos” will hit cinemas nationwide on August 28, bringing the story of one of Lagos’ most influential traditional rulers and the power struggles that shaped the kingdom in the 19th century to a wider audience.
The Yoruba-language drama, directed by Adebayo Tijani, is produced by Teqsus Studios and distributed by FilmOne Entertainment. The film will have its grand premiere on August 23 at IMAX Lekki, Lagos, ahead of its nationwide theatrical release.
Set between 1833 and 1852, the movie explores the struggle for the Lagos throne, political rivalries, leadership and resistance to external forces seeking to influence the affairs of the kingdom before its transformation into the modern city of Lagos.
Femi Adebayo stars as Oba Kosoko, the 12th Oba of Lagos, with a cast of more than 70 actors. Other notable cast members include Odunlade Adekola, Jide Kosoko, Gabriel Afolayan, Fathia Williams, Yinka Quadri, Taiwo Hassan, Tina Mba and Femi Branch.
Teqsus Studios described the production as a story of “Power. Betrayal. Legacy,” as it announced the release date on social media.
The film joins a growing wave of Nigerian historical productions seeking to preserve the country’s cultural heritage while introducing significant chapters of its history to contemporary cinema audiences.
