The Kano State Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB) has warned roadside traders against dumping refuse on roads and in drainage channels, urging them to provide waste bins at their business premises.
The board’s Managing Director, Dr Muhammad Salisu-Khalil, said traders selling boiled and roasted maize and other food items along major roads must ensure proper disposal of waste generated from their activities.
He specifically urged traders operating along France, Katsina, Maiduguri, Zaria and Zoo roads to maintain proper sanitation, warning that maize husks, cobs and other refuse dumped on roads and in drainage channels could block waterways and worsen environmental pollution.
REMASAB said it carries out daily street sweeping, refuse evacuation and environmental sanitation across the state but expressed concern that some traders return to cleaned locations to dump waste.
The board stressed that environmental sanitation was a collective responsibility and warned that offenders would face legal action, including prosecution before the Environmental Sanitation Court.
REMASAB said its objective was not to stop residents from conducting legitimate businesses but to ensure that commercial activities were carried out in a clean and environmentally responsible manner.
