The Kano State Zoological and Wildlife Management Agency (KAZOWMA) has warned residents against poaching, illegal hunting and indiscriminate tree felling in the Falgore Game Reserve.
The Agency’s Managing Director, Musayyib Kawu, issued the warning on Saturday during the 2026 World Rangers’ Day celebration at the reserve in Doguwa Local Government Area. The event was held under the theme, “Guardians of a Changing Planet.”
Kawu said illegal hunting, bush burning, tree felling and other activities were degrading the forest and threatening wildlife. He warned that anyone violating environmental and wildlife protection laws would face appropriate sanctions.
Kawu urged communities surrounding the reserve to work with authorities to protect the forest and wildlife, stressing that environmental conservation required collective action. He commended rangers for their dedication and sacrifices, including those who had lost their lives in the line of duty. He also pledged to improve the welfare of workers at the reserve, particularly casual staff, and pursue permanent and pensionable employment opportunities for deserving employees.
Also speaking, the Director of Zoo Services, Hajiya Hafsat Bello, encouraged Nigerians to plant more trees, noting their importance in combating climate change, preventing erosion and maintaining healthy ecosystems.
Bello said the 2026 celebration was particularly significant as it marked the 20th anniversary of World Rangers’ Day, providing an opportunity to recognise the contributions and sacrifices of rangers in protecting forests and wildlife worldwide.
