Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has confirmed the rescue of seven students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade, who were abducted by suspected gunmen. Addressing journalists in Abeokuta, the governor said the victims were rescued following a coordinated security operation involving multiple agencies. One of the students sustained a gunshot injury during the incident but has been treated and is in stable condition.
Abiodun said the state government immediately activated a joint rescue operation involving the Police, Armed Forces, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Amotekun Corps, Ogun Security Network, vigilantes and local hunters. He added that a police helicopter was deployed to support the operation after he requested air assistance from the Inspector-General of Police.
The governor assured residents that efforts were ongoing to arrest everyone linked to the abduction, including the perpetrators, collaborators and sponsors. He also commended President Bola Tinubu for strengthening national security through improved intelligence coordination, better welfare for security personnel and investment in modern security equipment.
The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, said no ransom was paid for the students’ release. He confirmed that two suspected kidnappers had been arrested, while security operatives continue to comb the forest in search of other members of the gang. The students were abducted on July 29 from a private hostel along Paraga Road in Ipara-Remo.
