Super Falcons Head Coach Justin Madugu has urged his players to eliminate the mistakes made during the group stage as they prepare for Sunday’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) quarter-final against Cameroon. The coach issued the warning after Nigeria sealed top spot in Group C with an emphatic 6-2 victory over Egypt.
Madugu said African women’s football had become more competitive, warning that any lapse could be punished at the knockout stage. He stressed that the Falcons must remain focused and disciplined if they hope to continue their title pursuit.
Nigeria secured first place in the group after a dramatic final round, where the Super Falcons, Malawi and Zambia all finished on six points. CAF’s head-to-head goals-scored rule saw Nigeria and Malawi progress, while Zambia crashed out despite beating Malawi 2-1. Against Egypt, goals from Asisat Oshoala, Gift Monday, Uchenna Kanu, Christy Ucheibe, Rasheedat Ajibade and Joy Omewa sealed an impressive victory.
The Super Falcons will now take on Cameroon in Casablanca on Sunday for a place in the semi-finals, while Malawi will face either Ghana or Mali. Nigeria will be aiming to maintain their strong form as the race for the WAFCON title enters the knockout stage.
