The Federal Government has assured residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) that there is no cause for alarm after a mild earth tremor was recorded in parts of Abuja. According to the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA), the light seismic event occurred at about 11:23 a.m. on Tuesday August 4 and was classified as a Level I–II tremor.
The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, said the tremor posed no threat to lives or property, adding that the government had activated continuous monitoring to track any further seismic activity. The NGSA has also commenced 24-hour surveillance and is submitting regular situation reports to the ministry.
Authorities urged residents to remain calm and continue their normal daily activities, stressing that the event was minor and under close observation. The government said it would keep the public informed of any significant developments.
The latest tremor follows previous low-intensity seismic activities recorded in parts of the FCT, particularly around Mpape, Katampe and Maitama. Experts say such events are generally linked to localized geological adjustments and remain low risk to structurally sound buildings, although continuous monitoring remains essential.
