The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Muttaqha Rabe Darma, has assured Nigerians that no critical records or customer data were lost in the fire incident at the headquarters of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) in Abuja.
Darma gave the assurance on Tuesday after inspecting the affected section of the building. He said the fire, which occurred on Saturday, was contained on part of the second floor, with preliminary findings suggesting an electrical fault as the likely cause.
According to the minister, FMBN’s digital transformation and cloud-based backup system ensured that critical documents and customer information remained safe and accessible. He said the fire mainly destroyed physical paperwork, while the bank remained fully operational.
Darma also reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to expanding access to affordable housing, saying ongoing FMBN reforms would improve mortgage delivery. He assured Nigerians that the administration’s target of delivering 100,000 housing units within four years would be achieved, while FMBN had been directed to strengthen its processes and work towards providing about 2,000 mortgages annually.
