A Kano State High Court has sentenced a 37-year-old man, Tahir Tanimu, to death by hanging after finding him guilty of the fatal stabbing of Shamsu Yakubu during a politically-related attack in Kano. The judgment, delivered on Monday August 3 by Justice Aisha Mahmoud, also addressed the fate of Tanimu’s co-defendant, Martins Joseph, who was a minor at the time of the incident.
The court convicted both defendants on three counts of criminal conspiracy, abetment and culpable homicide, holding that the prosecution established its case beyond reasonable doubt. Tahir Tanimu was sentenced to death by hanging, while Martin Joseph who was 15 years old when he committed the offence, was left for the governor to determine his fate.
According to the prosecution, on March 1, 2019, at Unguwa Uku Quarters in Kano, one Aminu Malan, who remains at large, allegedly mobilised Tanimu, Joseph and seven other suspects still on the run to attack the deceased at his residence following a disagreement over politics. During the attack, the court heard that Yakubu was stabbed in the chest with a sharp knife, an injury that resulted in his death.
Although both defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges, the court rejected their defence after evaluating the evidence.
