Faith and cultural leaders in Kaduna State have been urged to use their influence to promote breastfeeding and help reduce maternal and infant mortality in their communities.
The call was made during a breastfeeding awareness programme organised by Al-Manar Women Association in partnership with Faith and Cultural Champions and the Medical Women Association of Nigeria at Kudansa Palace in Chikun Local Government Area. Project Manager of Faith and Cultural Champions, Mrs Rabiat Sodangi, said trusted community leaders could help improve acceptance of important health practices.
Paediatrician at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, Dr Fatima Abdullahi, advocated exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life, saying it supports healthy physical and cognitive development and protects babies against several childhood illnesses. She also encouraged mothers to initiate breastfeeding within one hour of delivery and continue breastfeeding alongside complementary feeding for up to two years.
Abdullahi called for greater support for breastfeeding mothers through paid maternity leave, workplace crèches and breastfeeding breaks. She also urged families, particularly fathers, to provide emotional, nutritional and practical support to mothers, while stressing the importance of antenatal care and delivery in health facilities.
The programme, held as part of activities marking the 2026 World Breastfeeding Week, featured health talks, breastfeeding demonstrations and interactive sessions. Organisers said the initiative is being implemented across six local government areas in Kaduna State to strengthen maternal, newborn and child health.
