The Kogi State Police Command has commenced a comprehensive investigation into the death of Rev. Fr. Samuel Opeyemi, whose body was discovered on July 29 in Ajaokuta Local Government Area of the state.

Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Afusat Saliu, said operatives were mobilised to the scene after receiving a report of the incident. The victim was taken to a hospital, where he was confirmed dead, before his remains were deposited at a mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

Saliu identified the deceased as a priest of St. Paul Parish, Ayetoro Gbede, in Ijumu Local Government Area. She said the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Kankarofi, had ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a thorough and discreet investigation.

The police appealed to the public to remain calm and avoid speculation or the circulation of unverified information. The command said investigators were pursuing available leads and assured the deceased’s family, the Catholic community and the public that efforts would be made to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
