The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, has warned that human traffickers are increasingly exploiting social media, encrypted platforms and fake recruitment websites, creating new challenges for Nigeria’s fight against trafficking.
Fagbemi, represented by a ministry official in Abuja, said Nigerian graduates were being lured with fake overseas job offers in technology, digital marketing, cryptocurrency and telecommunications before being trapped in scam compounds. He called for stronger enforcement of anti-trafficking and cybercrime laws, improved digital evidence capabilities and greater international cooperation.
The minister disclosed that NAPTIP has secured 839 convictions since its establishment, including 47 between January and July 2026. He added that 156 victims were rescued during the period, while more than 300 Nigerians trafficked to Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire were repatriated in 2025.
Fagbemi urged technology companies, telecom operators, financial institutions, parents, schools and community leaders to support efforts to identify and disrupt trafficking networks. He also warned young Nigerians to carefully verify online job and migration offers, as traffickers increasingly use attractive digital opportunities to target potential victims.
