Former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola has praised the outstanding performances of young players at the 2026 ITTF Africa Youth Cup in Accra, describing the tournament as proof of Africa’s immense sporting talent and potential.
Speaking at the grand finale, Fashola commended ITTF Africa for organising a successful competition, saying the continent is rich in young athletes who only need the right support and development to compete at the highest level. He also received an award in recognition of his contributions to the growth of table tennis in Africa.
Fashola urged African governments to invest more in grassroots sports, noting that with the continent’s youthful population, sports can create opportunities, generate wealth and contribute significantly to economic development.
He added that policymakers should view sports as a major industry capable of driving growth, stressing that deliberate investment in young talents would position Africa to benefit from the global sports economy.
