AI RESHAPING NIGERIAN FILMMAKING, BUT HUMAN CREATIVITY STILL LEADS – EXPERTS

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming Nigeria’s film and creative industry, making visual storytelling faster, more affordable and accessible to filmmakers. Creative professionals say AI is helping independent creators produce high-quality content while opening new opportunities across the industry.

Speaking in separate interviews, filmmakers said AI now supports script development, storyboarding, editing, visual effects, audio enhancement, subtitle generation and content distribution. They, however, stressed that technology cannot replace authentic storytelling, originality and the emotional connection that human creators bring to their work.

Founder of ONIZ Creative, Onesiphorus Enwerem, described AI as a powerful creative assistant that enables smaller production teams to achieve more with limited resources. He encouraged filmmakers to embrace emerging technologies while mastering the fundamentals of storytelling, directing, lighting and editing.

Documentary filmmaker Jerry Laz also said AI has reduced production costs and made professional filmmaking tools more accessible. He urged creatives to use AI wisely without losing the heart of their stories, noting that meaningful Nigerian narratives will always remain the industry’s greatest strength.

The filmmakers also called on governments to support the creative sector through grants and subsidised training programmes, saying continuous learning and responsible use of AI will help strengthen Nigeria’s growing creative economy.
