The first trailer for the highly anticipated film adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling fantasy novel, Children of Blood and Bone, has been released, offering fans a glimpse of its star-studded cast and visually striking portrayal of the mythical kingdom of Orïsha.
Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, the film features an impressive lineup of Black actors, including Idris Elba, Cynthia Erivo, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Regina King, Viola Davis, Damson Idris, Lashana Lynch, Amandla Stenberg, Tosin Cole and South African actress Thuso Mbedu, who leads the cast as Zélie Adebola. Based on Adeyemi’s 2018 debut novel, the story follows Zélie’s quest to restore magic to Orïsha after it is suppressed by the ruthless King Saran.
The trailer, soundtracked by excerpts from Beyoncé’s Energy, showcases epic battle scenes, elaborate costumes and breathtaking African-inspired landscapes, drawing comparisons to Black Panther and The Woman King. The fantasy adventure is expected to be one of the biggest African-inspired Hollywood releases in recent years.
Ahead of the film’s release, Adeyemi revealed she has distanced herself from the adaptation despite co-writing the screenplay. In recent social media posts, the author said she would not be promoting the movie and disclosed that she had cut off communication with actress Amandla Stenberg, without publicly explaining the reasons for the fallout. Children of Blood and Bone is scheduled to premiere in cinemas on January 15, 2027.
