A major fire disaster was averted in Ilorin, Kwara State, after a 45,000-litre petrol tanker detached from its truck while being repositioned inside a filling station in the Eyenkorin area.
The incident occurred at YTK Filling Station opposite the Youth Camp in Apata, where the tanker, loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), reportedly lost control and crashed into the station’s perimeter fence. The impact caused the tanker compartment to separate from the truck, raising fears of a possible explosion.
The Kwara State Fire Service said firefighters responded immediately after receiving a distress call and secured the area to prevent the highly flammable fuel from igniting. They also supervised the safe transfer of the petrol into another tanker, successfully preventing a fire outbreak.
Chief Fire Officer Alabi Muhammed commended the emergency responders for their swift and professional intervention, noting that their prompt action prevented what could have been a major disaster. No lives were lost, and no injuries or fire damage were recorded.
The Fire Service has urged tanker drivers and petroleum marketers to strictly observe safety procedures when transporting and handling petroleum products to reduce the risk of similar incidents.
