Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Anambra State, has dismissed reports claiming that students died in the building collapse that occurred on Sunday night in Amaokpala, Orumba North Local Government Area, describing the information as false and misleading.
The Polytechnic clarified that the collapsed three-storey structure was a privately owned lodge in the neighbouring Amaokpala community, not on the institution’s campus. It added that the building was occupied by both students and non-students, and that no Federal Polytechnic, Oko student had been confirmed dead.
The institution explained that the incident happened after second-semester examinations, when many students had already left their hostels for the academic break, reducing the number of students still in the area. It also stated that two people believed to be trapped beneath the rubble were reportedly not students of the Polytechnic.
Rector Dr. Chioma Irene Awuzie led a delegation to the scene on Monday morning to assess the situation alongside government officials and emergency responders. The Polytechnic said several occupants had been rescued and taken to hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening, while rescue efforts continued for those still trapped.
The management urged the public to disregard unverified reports and rely only on official updates. It also commended emergency responders, security agencies, government officials and volunteers for their ongoing efforts, reaffirming its commitment to the safety and welfare of its students.
