The United Kingdom has temporarily withdrawn its remaining diplomatic staff from Iran as hostilities between the United States and Iran continue to intensify, with fresh overnight airstrikes adding to growing regional tensions.
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said its embassy would continue operating remotely because of the deteriorating security situation. It also renewed its advisory against all travel to Iran, warning that British and dual British-Iranian nationals face a significant risk of arrest or detention.
The United States said its latest military operations were aimed at weakening Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping in regional waters. Iranian state media reported missile strikes near the western cities of Ahvaz, Ramshir and Andimeshk, while Kuwait said its air defences intercepted hostile drones following what it described as Iranian aggression.
Iran, however, vowed a strong response to any further attacks. Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said the country would adopt an “eye for an eye” approach, warning that any strike on Iranian infrastructure would trigger decisive retaliation. Reports also indicated that Iran had launched missiles toward Jordan and targeted energy and water infrastructure in parts of the Gulf region.
The latest developments have heightened fears of a wider regional conflict, with international observers urging restraint amid concerns over the impact on civilian infrastructure, maritime security and regional stability.
