Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has marked his 65th birthday with a call for Nigerians to prioritise service to humanity over lavish celebrations. He said birthdays should be moments of thanksgiving, reflection and renewed commitment to improving the lives of others.
In a statement issued on Sunday July 19, Obi said Nigeria’s current economic and social challenges, including poverty, unemployment, insecurity and inadequate healthcare, demand compassion and selfless leadership rather than extravagant personal celebrations. He maintained that the greatest measure of a person’s life is the positive impact made on others.
As part of his birthday activities, Obi attended a Thanksgiving Mass in Onitsha before visiting St. Raphael’s Hospital in Umueri, Anambra East Local Government Area, where he donated ₦10 million to support healthcare services. He said meeting patients at the rural facility reinforced the need for leaders to prioritise the welfare of vulnerable Nigerians.
Obi added that throughout his career, he had encouraged well-wishers to channel resources meant for gifts and celebrations into schools, healthcare facilities and other community projects. He reaffirmed that investing in education and healthcare remains one of the most meaningful ways to build a better future for Nigeria.
