The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has announced that Prof. Sylvester Odion Akhaine of Lagos State University (LASU) will deliver the 4th Lateef Jakande Memorial Lecture on July 23 in Lagos.
The lecture, scheduled to hold at the Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, from 11:00 a.m., is themed “The Media, INEC, Voters and Path to Credible Elections.” Akhaine, a political science professor and former pro-democracy activist, is recognised for his contributions to democratic governance, constitutional development and media discourse in Nigeria.
In a statement signed by NGE President, Eze Anaba, and General Secretary, Onuoha Ukeh, the Guild said the annual lecture was established in 2023 to honour the legacy of the late Alhaji Lateef Jakande, the Guild’s pioneer President, former Lagos State Governor and former Minister of Works. Former Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, will chair the event, while Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is expected as the Special Guest of Honour.
The NGE said the event would bring together media executives, public officials, academics, civil society organisations and journalism students to discuss the role of the media in strengthening democracy. It added that inviting students each year is part of efforts to inspire future journalists through interaction with experienced media professionals.
