Flooding could soon lead to higher vegetable prices in Lagos, according to farmers affected by heavy rainfall across parts of the state.
Chairperson of the Ojo Farmers Community, Mrs Mayriam Ali, said floods have destroyed crops, submerged farmlands and disrupted harvesting activities, leaving many farmers struggling to recover their losses. She warned that vegetables such as ugu, spinach, spring onions, oregano and waterleaf may become more expensive in the coming weeks.
Ali explained that farmers in Ojo and surrounding communities face recurring flooding due to the area’s swampy terrain, while inadequate drainage and limited access to water-pumping equipment have worsened the situation. She called for affordable solar-powered pumps, improved transportation infrastructure and greater government support for farming communities.
Despite the challenges, farmers remain hopeful that production will improve as floodwaters recede. However, consumers may continue to experience fluctuating vegetable prices until farms fully recover.
