An audiologist, Mrs Akanchawa Emmanuel, has advised pregnant women to avoid self-medication, warning that taking certain drugs without medical supervision could affect a baby’s hearing development and lead to permanent hearing loss.
Speaking in Benin, Emmanuel explained that some antibiotics and anti-malaria medications may have ototoxic effects, which can damage the auditory system. She noted that the baby’s hearing organs begin developing early in pregnancy, making professional medical guidance essential before taking any medication.
She added that hearing loss in children can delay speech and language development because children learn to communicate by hearing and imitating sounds. Emmanuel also attributed self-medication among some expectant mothers to easy access to over-the-counter drugs, advice from informal drug sellers and reliance on previous medication experiences.
The audiologist urged pregnant women to register early for antenatal care, consult qualified healthcare professionals before taking any medication and ensure newborns undergo hearing screening after birth for early detection and intervention where necessary. She also called for greater public awareness of safe medication practices during pregnancy.
