Troops of the Joint Task Force in Kano have foiled a bandits’ attack and recovered 147 livestock along the Yankamaye-Rimaye axis on the Kano-Katsina border.
According to a statement by the 3 Brigade Nigerian Army, troops acted on credible intelligence on July 15 indicating that armed bandits were moving rustled animals through the area. The soldiers swiftly positioned themselves at suspected crossing points and intercepted the attackers.
The troops engaged the bandits in a gun battle, forcing them to abandon the livestock and flee toward Katsina State. Security operatives recovered 97 cattle and 50 sheep, while two suspected terrorists and a motorcycle were also captured during the operation.
The army said all recovered cattle had been returned to their rightful owners. However, a local vigilante, Mallam Yusuf Adamu of Yanchibi village, was killed after being caught in the crossfire during the exchange.
Commander of the 3 Brigade, Brig.-Gen. Saka Jimoh, commended the troops for their professionalism and urged them to sustain operations until criminal elements in the area were neutralised. He also encouraged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies.
