JIGAWA LAUNCHES DIGITAL TAX PLATFORM, TARGETS HIGHER REVENUE FROM INFORMAL SECTOR

Listen

Jigawa State has taken another step toward modernising its tax system with the launch of a digital platform designed to improve revenue collection from the informal sector.

The new platform, introduced by the Jigawa Internal Revenue Service (JIRS), will automate tax collection for activities including livestock trading, grain markets and haulage operations. Officials say the technology will reduce leakages, improve accountability and ensure payments go directly into government accounts.

JIRS disclosed that the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) increased from ₦27.5 billion in 2023 to ₦62.6 billion in 2024, driven largely by ongoing digital reforms. The latest initiative is expected to further strengthen revenue generation, with a target of at least ₦500 million monthly from the informal sector.

State officials say the platform will replace manual collection methods with a more transparent and efficient system, helping government improve service delivery while making tax administration easier for citizens and businesses.
