The Nigerian Army has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting human rights and upholding International Humanitarian Law (IHL) as part of ongoing counter-insurgency and security operations across the country.
Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, gave the assurance during a meeting with the Head of Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Nigeria, Doris El Doueihy, in Abuja. He said respect for human rights, civilian protection and stronger civil-military relations remain essential to effective military operations and public trust.
Shaibu noted that the Army has integrated International Humanitarian Law, human rights principles and rules of engagement into its training programmes. He added that the service is implementing its Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response Plan, improving detention management and working with humanitarian organisations to ensure the protection of vulnerable populations.
In her remarks, El Doueihy commended the Nigerian Army for its professionalism and continued collaboration with the ICRC. She said the partnership has strengthened humanitarian assistance in conflict-affected communities and acknowledged the Army’s progress in detention management and adherence to internationally recognised humanitarian standards.
