ARMY WARNS AGAINST FALSE SOCIAL MEDIA NARRATIVES THAT UNDERMINE TROOPS

Listen

The Nigerian Army has urged Nigerians to refrain from spreading false and misleading information on social media, warning that such narratives undermine the morale of troops risking their lives to protect the country. The appeal was made by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col. Appolonia Anele, during a meeting with the Defence Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DECAN) in Abuja.

Anele said misinformation and disinformation have become major challenges to national security, noting that while digital platforms have improved communication, they have also enabled the rapid spread of unverified claims. She stressed that soldiers serving in various operational theatres deserve public support and appreciation for their sacrifices.

The Army spokesperson cited a recent rescue operation in Oyo State, where an Army officer, a soldier and a police officer lost their lives while rescuing abducted students and teachers. She described it as discouraging when such sacrifices are overlooked by false claims that the military is doing nothing to address.

She reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to providing timely and verified information, while urging journalists to uphold factual and balanced reporting. The Defence Correspondents Association also pledged continued collaboration with the military to ensure Nigerians receive accurate and credible information on security matters.
