E.U. MOVES TO RESTRICT CHILDREN’S ACCESS TO SOCIAL MEDIA ACROSS MEMBER STATES

The European Union is preparing new rules that could significantly limit social media access for young children across its 27 member states.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the proposed measures are aimed at protecting children from online risks and ensuring age-appropriate access to digital platforms. Recommendations under consideration would allow children under 13 to use social media only for limited periods and under adult supervision.

The proposal also introduces a phased approach, with restrictions gradually easing as teenagers grow older. EU officials say the focus is on creating a safer online environment while balancing access to digital tools.

A formal proposal is expected later this year as governments worldwide continue to debate how best to protect young users in the digital age.
