Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, says the UN is prepared to support initiatives aimed at strengthening state policing and regional border security across West Africa.
Speaking in New York during a meeting with Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, alongside senior international officials, Jimoh said rising insecurity in the Sahel and neighbouring countries requires stronger regional cooperation, modern policing strategies and technology-driven solutions.
The ambassador proposed the creation of a specialised West African border police force to improve cross-border security and combat terrorism, organised crime and other transnational threats. He also commended ongoing discussions around state policing in Nigeria, describing it as a strategic approach to addressing security challenges at the grassroots level.
According to Jimoh, the United Nations is willing to support efforts that promote peace, border stability and regional development. He expressed confidence that deeper collaboration among countries, security agencies and international partners can help strengthen security across West Africa.
