No fewer than 52 inmates in custodial centres across Kano State have commenced the 2026 NECO and National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS) examinations, highlighting the Nigerian Correctional Service’s commitment to rehabilitation through education.

The Kano State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) said the candidates, comprising 41 male and 11 female inmates, were drawn from various custodial centres in the state. According to the command, the initiative is aimed at promoting reformation, skills development and successful reintegration into society after serving their custodial terms.

Controller of Corrections in Kano State, Yusuf Ahmad-Lakpene, who monitored the commencement of the examinations, described the exercise as another milestone in the Service’s rehabilitation efforts. He urged the candidates to conduct themselves with discipline and integrity, noting that education remains a vital tool for reducing reoffending and transforming lives.

Ahmad-Lakpene also commended Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf for sponsoring the registration fees of the inmate-candidates, describing the gesture as a demonstration of the state government’s commitment to inclusive education and human capital development.

The correctional service reaffirmed its resolve to expand educational programmes across custodial centres, saying increased access to learning opportunities would foster personal development, positive behavioural change and better reintegration outcomes for inmates.
