The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted a 200 million naira bail to former presidential candidate and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, in his ongoing alleged defamation case.

In a ruling on Tuesday, Justice Mohammed Umar vacated an earlier order revoking Sowore’s bail and remanding him in Kuje Correctional Centre. The court ordered that Sowore provide two sureties, including a traditional ruler from his community who owns landed property in Abuja. The sureties are also to be verified by the prosecution.

The court further directed Sowore to deposit his international passport with the Deputy Chief Registrar of the court. Following the ruling, he was released to his legal team pending the fulfillment of the bail conditions.

The case stems from charges filed by the Department of State Services (DSS), which alleges that Sowore made defamatory statements against President Bola Tinubu on social media. The matter has been adjourned until July 6, when the defendant is expected to begin presenting his defence.
