Listen

Nigeria has set its sights on securing a seat on the United Nations Security Council next year following another diplomatic success at the global body.

Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, made the declaration after Nigeria’s candidate, Esther Eghobamien-Mshelia, won re-election to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). He described the victory as a sign of Nigeria’s growing influence and active engagement within the United Nations system.

According to the envoy, Nigeria has recorded three major international election victories in recent weeks, including the election of Prof. Femi Elias to the International Law Commission and his emergence as Chairman of the UN Budget Committee. He said the achievements reflect the country’s renewed diplomatic drive and commitment to advancing the interests of women, children and young people globally.

Eghobamien-Mshelia, who secured 123 votes in the highly competitive election, thanked the Nigerian government and diplomatic team for their support. She pledged to use her new term on the CEDAW Committee to promote gender equality and ensure emerging digital technologies protect and empower women worldwide. As Nigeria prepares for the next UN Security Council election, attention will be on how the country builds on its recent diplomatic momentum.
