The National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Akwa Ibom has urged citizens to ensure responsible use of the social media for credible information dissemination. The NOA Director in Akwa Ibom, Mr Mkpoutom Mkpoutom, made the call at a public sensitization campaign on Friday June 26 in Uyo.

Mkpoutom said that although the social media had empowered citizens to play roles in the information process, its abuse and misuse should be discouraged. He urged members of the public to always cross-check information from credible sources before posting on the social media.

The NOA official said that the social media should be used to promote Nigeria’s rich culture, and to hold public officers to account. He further stated that the agency would take the sensitization campaign to schools, places of worship, markets among others, using radio programmes and town hall meetings.

Mkpoutom urged parents and guardians to monitor the online activities of their wards to avoid abuse and misuse of social media platforms.
