The Lagos State Government has announced plans to acquire 150 additional compactor trucks in an effort to improve waste management. The state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this on Saturday June 27 during the monthly environmental sanitation across the state.
Wahab said the monthly exercise underscored the government’s commitment to maintaining a clean, healthy and sustainable environment. According to him, the state is deliberately involving young people and schoolchildren in environmental activities to instill a culture of cleanliness and environmental responsibility in them. He added that the exercise should be viewed as a collective responsibility requiring the participation of all residents.
Acknowledging the operational challenges affecting waste evacuation, Wahab said the government had approved procurement of about 150 new compactor trucks to strengthen waste collection and evacuation. He added that some of the trucks would be assembled locally to boost operational efficiency and support local capacity development.
While pledging government support for Private Sector Participation (PSP) waste operators, Wahab urged Lagos residents to pay their waste management bills promptly to enable PSP operators to sustain efficient service delivery.
