Listen

The United Nations has reported that around 950 human rights defenders, journalists, and trade unionists were killed or forcibly disappeared globally in 2025.

The figures were released in a new report by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), which tracks global attacks on individuals involved in protecting rights and freedoms.

The report also raised concern over civilian deaths in armed conflicts and increasing levels of discrimination affecting people worldwide. It noted that the situation remains a serious global concern, with no clear improvement in recent trends.

The UN has called for stronger protection measures and renewed international commitment to safeguard human rights and reduce violence against civilians and activists.
