Ivorian winger Amad Diallo’s 90th-minute strike made the difference as Cote d`Ivoire defeated Ecuador in their first group match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in group E.
The Manchester United forward who came on later in the game was set up by Wilfred Singo who broke down the right wing and delivered a pass for Amad which he utilized from the edge of the box.
Ecuador came close to scoring twice in the first half but saw both strikes from Yeboah and Minda striking the crossbar.
The defeat brought an end to Ecuador’s 19-game unbeaten run. They will face group E underdogs Curacao on Saturday. On the other hand, Cote d`Ivoire, now with 3 points will face the Germans who top the group after trashing Curacao 7-1 earlier.
Cote d’Ivoire became the first African team to win their opening World Cup match since Senegal defeated Poland on June 19, 2018.
