The Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) says playtime is not a break from learning but central to children’s thinking, feeling, and performance in school.
LASUBEB Chairman, Dr. Hakeem Shittu, spoke in an interview in Lagos on Thursday June 11, on the side-lines of an event to mark International Day of Play. The event tagged: “Protect Play, Protect Childhood’ was supported by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and featured play-based lessons and creative activities for pupils.
Speaking, Shittu said Lagos State continues to invest in school buildings, teacher training, and learning materials to raise education standards. He added that LASUBEB will keep pushing child-centred teaching that sparks curiosity, creativity, and participation in safe, inclusive classrooms.
The Lagos Field Office Chief of UNICEF, Ms Celine Lafoucriere, during the event, warned that insecurity and crowded classrooms were blocking many children from learning and playing. She described play as a right and not a reward for finishing schoolwork.
She consequently, urged governments, schools, parents, and communities to create safe spaces to enable children learn and play.
