The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned a couple, Olorunbukunmi Taiwo and his wife, Awolegan Omolola Omotola, before the Federal High Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti over an alleged contract fraud involving N1,098,961,500.
The Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the EFCC brought the duo before Justice Abubakar Usman on a six-count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretence and retention of proceeds of crime.
According to the anti-graft agency, the defendants allegedly defrauded a woman who runs a private school in Delta State after approaching her with claims of securing a road construction contract from the Delta State Oil Producing Area Development Commission (DESOPADEC). However the over one billion naira obtained by the defendants to secure the contract was allegedly rather used to acquire properties in Ado-Ekiti.
The defendants pleaded not guilty to all the charges when they were read to them. The EFCC counsel, Sesan Ola, urged the court to fix a date for trial, and also requested that the defendants be remanded in custody pending hearing.
Justice Usman subsequently adjourned the case till Thursday, June 11, 2026, for hearing of the bail application and commencement of trial, while ordering that the defendants remain in EFCC custody.
