CUSTOMS LEADERSHIP NEEDS MORE THAN DIGITAL SKILLS — SEREC

The Sea Empowerment and Research Centre (SEREC) says digital skills alone are not enough for leadership roles in the Nigeria Customs Service.

According to the centre, future leadership must balance technological competence with integrity, professionalism, and strong ethical standards to ensure effective service delivery and public trust.

SEREC also notes that customs leadership requires broader expertise, including customs law, trade facilitation systems, enforcement, valuation, and institutional governance, in addition to digital knowledge.

The centre further emphasizes that merit, discipline, and proven performance should guide leadership succession as the service prepares for a generational transition.

It adds that strong succession planning and continuous professional development will help strengthen the Nigeria Customs Service for future challenges.
