One of Africa’s most celebrated novels could be heading to the screen once again.
Canal+ has included “Americanah”, the acclaimed 2013 novel by Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, among its African story projects currently in development. The announcement was shared by African Film Press, noting that the project joins Canal+’s growing portfolio of African-focused productions.
The development comes years after an earlier adaptation effort was shelved. A planned HBO Max limited series, which had been announced in 2019, did not move forward after production delays linked to the COVID-19 pandemic and other scheduling challenges.
Canal+ has not yet disclosed whether the new project is connected to previous adaptation plans or represents a completely fresh take on the novel. Details on the format, cast, writers, directors, production partners and release timeline are expected at a later date.
“Americanah,” which follows the journeys of Ifemelu and Obinze between Nigeria, the United States and the United Kingdom, is widely recognised for its exploration of identity, migration and belonging. The novel remains one of the most influential works of contemporary African literature.
