TEACHERS SHUT OYO SCHOOLS INDEFINITELY OVER ABDUCTION OF COLLEAGUES, PUPILS

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has ordered an indefinite strike across all public primary and secondary schools in Oyo State, demanding the immediate rescue of seven teachers and 39 pupils abducted by gunmen in Orire Local Government Area over two weeks ago.

The industrial action, which takes effect from Monday, June 1, 2026, follows growing anxiety over the fate of the victims who were kidnapped on May 15 while carrying out their academic activities.

According to the union, all teachers in public schools across the state have been instructed to stay away from classrooms until the abducted teachers and pupils are safely rescued and reunited with their families. The NUT said the decision became unavoidable after repeated appeals and engagements with relevant authorities and security agencies failed to secure the release of those in captivity.

To intensify pressure on authorities, the NUT also directed its state chapters nationwide to organise solidarity rallies on June 2, 2026, to draw national attention to the security challenges confronting schools and demand urgent intervention.

The NUT maintained that the strike would remain in force until all abducted teachers and pupils are rescued, insisting that the safety of educators and learners must be treated as a national priority.
