Residents of Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State have been thrown into mourning and disbelief following the arrest of a suspected serial killer, identified simply as Akaninyene.
The suspect was apprehended during a coordinated security operation involving personnel of the Nigerian Army, tactical security operatives, local vigilantes, community youths and traditional leaders after intelligence reports linked him to a string of disappearances and killings that had unsettled communities in the area for years.
The security operatives had traced Akaninyene to a secluded camp hidden deep within a forest in Abanyama, Ukim Ita Community. He was reportedly arrested after attempting to flee at sighting them.
A search of his hideout reportedly led to the discovery of about eight shallow graves concealed beneath plantain trees within the area. Each grave was alleged to contain decomposing bodies buried without their heads.
The suspect is alleged to have confessed during interrogation to killing about 30 people, some with the help of a woman he named. The latest killing which was on May 26, 2026, allegedly triggered the chain of events leading to his arrest. Residents had reported hearing distress calls and sounds of a struggle.
The incident has been described as one of the most horrifying criminal discoveries in the history of the area. For families whose relatives vanished without explanation, the revelations have brought both anguish and a possible clue to the fate of their missing loved ones.
As investigations continue, efforts are ongoing to identify the exhumed remains and determine the full extent of the alleged crimes.
